March 16-21 is National Wellderly Week! This fun play on words observance is all about promoting healthy aging among seniors. Celebrated each year during the third week of March, it focuses on helping seniors age well so they can enjoy their lives with vim and vigor, celebrating each day given to them.
This week can also be a great time to check in on those wellness New Year’s resolutions that were made to see if they either need to be refocused or started back up to help your loved one stay on the path of wellness and self-care all year long.
Five Well-Being Tips for Seniors
The great thing about implementing any of these changes is that each one provides health benefits in many areas of their lives, so they should see the benefits of these healthy changes popping up in lots of different ways, enriching their lives and increasing joy and feelings of well-being.
#1 Get Moving
Make sure to discuss with your elderly loved one’s primary doctor the best way to incorporate more movement into their day, and once you do, help your loved one get moving with gentle encouragement and assistance as needed.
Your loved one might need a partner to move around with, such as a family member, neighbor, or home care provider, joining them on walks around the neighborhood. Or they might need transportation assistance to get to a local pool once a week for a senior swim class or chair yoga.
#2 Eat Better
If bad eating habits are plaguing your elderly loved one, Wellderly Week is a great time to address them and start implementing changes that will lead to better food choices. Redoing their entire diet might seem too overwhelming, so talk about starting small and building from there.
You might encourage more meals to be made from fresh ingredients instead of frozen entrees, and help them shop for better-quality fresh produce when grocery shopping. You can ask a home care provider to help them plan meals for the week, so they don’t have to resort to fast food when hunger strikes.
#3 Sleep Better
Better sleep does the body good all day long! If your loved one has found that sleep is more difficult as they have aged, work with them to develop better sleep habits, some of which take place while they’re awake. This can mean getting enough exercise each day to be tired at night, not taking long naps, and avoiding foods that keep them up at night.
#4 Practice Gratitude
Mental health plays a huge part in overall wellness, so help your loved one cultivate more gratitude for the daily gifts by keeping a gratitude journal or meditating on the positive aspects of their lives.
#5 Stay Socially Connected
Finally, social connections are a huge part of wellness. Encourage your loved one to visit friends, attend events, and join clubs to meet and interact with others.
If your loved one is homebound, consider arranging regular visits from a home care provider who can play games with them, enjoy long conversations, and help them build regular social connections with a caring, friendly person.
Try one or two new wellness activities with your senior this week to increase their overall health and wellness.
