It’s hard to see someone you love coming to the end of their life, and as the end draws near, you want to make it as comfortable for your loved one, especially if they have been suffering from a long-term illness or disease. For many families, this may mean having their loved one move in with them for their final weeks, but for others, that’s not a possibility; they can still find resources to make sure their loved one gets the end of life care they deserve.
Four Places End-of-Life Can Occur
Also often called Hospice Care or Palliative Care, end of life care is a special team of caregivers, both family and professionals, who seek to make sure the dying person receives the best care possible without creating more stress by insisting upon care they no longer desire. This care team can step in just about any place your loved one is spending their final time.
- Home: Whether it’s his home, your home, or another family member’s home, end-of-life care most commonly occurs in someone’s home. Just being in a familiar home can provide extra comfort and peace for your loved one. It often makes it easier for the family to spend time together with the loved one, as well as provide comfort in unique ways, such as with a loving pet or baking up favorite dishes.
- Hospital: If your loved one is not able to leave the hospital due to the care he needs to continue to receive or medications that can only be administered in a hospital setting, an end of-life care team can come to him. End of life care teams will help the room he’s in and the care he receives seem less “sterile” and more natural. They will work with hospital staff.
- Nursing Home: If your loved one is in a nursing home where he has valued relationships with his caregivers and other residents, he might appreciate staying there with some additional care by a hospice team. Again, they will work with the current staff to provide the comfort and care your loved one needs in his final moments.
- A Hospice Center: Some providers have end of life care areas that are prepared to serve and care for your loved one as the end draws near.
Signs Your Loved One May Be Ready for End-of-Life Care
Deciding to have end of life care provided for your loved one can be one of the toughest decisions to make. It might feel like you’re giving up or refusing to fight for life anymore. But many families feel that once the decision has been made, it’s often the best choice for their loved one and for the family.
You’ll want to talk with your loved one’s doctors and other care providers, but common signs that it’s time for end of life care include:
- A general withdrawal from daily living activities such as grooming, socializing, or being active.
- Appetite has become non-existent.
- Body temperature drops, and your loved one needs more blankets to stay warm.
- Pain has become more difficult to manage.
- More time is spent sleeping than awake.
- An expressed desire to move on to a better place. Acceptance of the inevitable.
It’s never easy saying goodbye to those we love, but end of life care can help make the transition better for everyone.
